Budae in Korean means a military base and Jjigae means stew. The dish got its name because it was created during the Korean war when soldiers would pool together their rations that usually included canned goods with whatever ingredients they have at camp. They would make a huge pot of stew and share it together. At present, Budae Jjigae is one of the most popular comfort foods in Korea.
